After renovations, the DFAC will be contracted out to Aramark, a leading food distributor that operates food services globally and at many college campuses. The renovated DFAC will feature a campus-style dining option. Airmen will also be able to utilize their meal cards at the Northern Lights Club and Bowling Center on base.
Airmen living in the dorms can expect to see an increase in their basic allowance for sustenance, which will double its usual rate in order to compensate the cost of groceries. The anticipated payment of the BAS Type II will likely be May 15, 2018, but no later than June 1, 2018.
Dorm-residing Airmen are encouraged to review their Leave and Earnings Statement regularly to ensure they are receiving the correct BAS. If an error is found, Airmen should contact the finance office immediately. Additionally, Airmen should be aware they will be paid BAS Type I rather than BAS Type II if they are on any type of leave, deployment or temporary duty.
With an increase in BAS, Airmen being affected by the renovations are encouraged to speak to a community readiness specialist in the Airmen and Family Readiness Center. The specialists are available to help with finances and budgeting, which will be crucial for dorm residents to understand not only during the renovation period, but thereafter as well.
Aside from the increase of BAS, there will be programs available to teach and encourage dorm residents to choose healthy foods. Denae Grove, health promotion coordinator with the 319th Medical Group, hosts cooking classes to help guide Airmen in the kitchen with simple recipes that use smarter food choices.
“Healthy cooking doesn’t have to be hard or time-consuming,” Grove said. “With a bit of pre-planning, you can create something healthy in just as little time as fast-food.”
