SAN DIEGO, Calif.- Navy Environmental and Preventive Medicine Unit Five (NEPMU-5) was selected as the winner of the 11th Annual San Diego Military Advisory Council (SDMAC) Community Achievement Award. The award recognizes units who, by volunteering, have had a profound impact on the community.

The Community Achievement Awards are named in honor of Nancy Dix, the former president and a founding member of SDMAC. In addition to her highly successful career as a partner in the law firm of DLA Piper, Dix devoted more than 25 years of public service to supporting veterans, military, and defense communities in San Diego.

“I am so proud that we won this award because our team put our heart and soul into all of our events and it was incredibly rewarding to see that hard work recognized,” said Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Byron Hewitt, leading petty officer, NEMPU-5 threat assessment department.

NEPMU-5 has a strong relationship with local community members and is especially active with local school, Olympic View Elementary.

“The best part for me is empowering children to not only make positive decisions in their own lives, but to also have an impact on their friends and families as well,” said Hewitt. “These kids go home and share what they have learned, so the impact of what we do goes far beyond the children present at these events.”

Additionally, the command consistently volunteers on board the USS Midway (CV 41), at Father Joe’s Village, and the San Diego Veteran’s Museum and Memorial.

NEPMU-5 is not content to rest on its laurels however.

“We are looking into innovating our programs and pushing ourselves further to see how many more community members we can reach out to,” said Hewitt.

The enlisted personnel at NEPMU-5 played a major role in the work that resulted in the command being selected for the SDMAC Community Award.

"First and foremost, it's an honor to be part of NEPMU-5 and to be named as one of the winners of the SDMAC award – well, that's just the icing on the cake really,” said Master Chief Leonardo Carbonel, senior enlisted leader, NEPMU-5. “The environment and leadership we have in this command challenges you to do your best. I believe our Sailors see that as an opportunity and, by doing so, we are able to focus on what's important and that is to take care of one another and get the mission done."

NEPMU-5 is dedicated to its community and is committed to ongoing support and outreach.

“We recognize that community service is a vital part of our mission here at NEPMU-5,” said Cmdr. Shelton Lyons, officer in charge, NEPMU-5. “It is important that we participate in early positive activities with the young people in our community in order to develop future leaders and Sailors. And it is equally important that we take care of veterans and preserve our heritage. This award recognizes the unit’s dedication to serving others around us and we are honored to receive it.”
