SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Navy Environmental and Preventive Medicine Unit Five (NEPMU-5) hosted three officers in three medical delegations from the Taiwan military as a part of the week-long subject matter exchange, March 16, 2018.
One Navy commander and two Army lieutenant colonels, each representing a different medical delegation in the Taiwan military, visited NEPMU-5 to participate in multiple training opportunities. The training opportunities included mass casualty, tactical combat casualty care and strategic operations involving Navy Medicine assets in southern California.
“NEPMU-5 is very welcoming and has outstanding leadership. We had a wonderful visit,” said Lt. Col. Tse-Chun Yang, chief of health services, Section Health Service Training Center of the National Defense Medical Center Taiwan.
The Taiwan military officers toured the comprehensive industrial hygiene laboratory and microbiology laboratory, and were introduced to the Forward Deployable Preventive Medicine Unit’s (FDPMU’s) capabilities.
“It is a great honor to have an opportunity to show our foreign military counterparts what we do here at NEPMU-5 and the services that we provide to support our overall mission,” said Cmdr. Shelton Lyons, officer in charge, NEPMU-5. “It is extremely important that we build and maintain relationships across different nations to further strengthen our Navy and infrastructure of our country.”
During the two-hour tour, the officers were given a brief overview of the services provided at NEPMU-5 and were able to interact with industrial hygienists, chemists, environmental health scientists, entomologists, preventive medicine technicians and microbiologists. The tour gave them insight on the unit’s force health protection capabilities, both ashore and afloat during deployment.
“I feel delighted to help out and I am very amazed by their academic knowledge. I think that this type of interaction provides the foundation for future cooperation initiatives,” said Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Feng Xu, preventive medicine technician, NEPMU-5. Xu utilized his Chinese-speaking expertise to help explain the mission of the command to the Taiwan military officers.
NEPMU-5 has demonstrated a sustained commitment to working with foreign militaries through its support of Pacific Partnership and Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training exercises as well global health engagements since the unit’s establishment in 1949.
