Col. Mike Manion, 55th Wing commander, spoke to the importance of base security at a 55th Security Forces Squadron all call March 27, 2018, at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska.
Due to a recent uptick of security breaches at Air Force bases across the world, Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. David Goldfein directed installation commanders to address potential vulnerabilities March 26.
“For you, a good day is when nothing happens,” said Manion during the all call. “It’s because you’re that visible strategic deterrent, day in and day out.”
While security forces actively defends the installation’s people and assets every day, it is the responsibility of all personnel to contribute to security. By adopting a “see something, say something,” approach, everyone can do their part to maintain a safe environment on base and in the surrounding community.
When reporting suspicious activity, including details of location, time, equipment, size, type of activity and a description of appearance of those involved can greatly assist security personnel.
Please report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement, security forces at [phone] or the Office of Special Investigations at [phone].
Examples of suspicious behavior may include someone attempting to measure reaction times to security breaches in order to assess strengths and weaknesses, people being put into position, mapping out routes or monitoring the timing of traffic lights, and purchasing or stealing supplies such as explosives, weapons, ammunition, timers or detonators. Other examples of suspicious supplies include uniforms, badges, flight manuals or any other controlled items. Suspicious persons could be those who don’t seem to belong in a workplace, neighborhood or business establishment.
As a matter of practice, specific security measures currently in place or being taken are not discussed. The 55th SFS takes appropriate actions and adheres to established security protocols to ensure the safety and security of the base.
The Offutt AFB force protection condition has not changed and currently remains set at Bravo.
