Naval Hospital Bremerton’s (NHB) revamped Main Outpatient Pharmacy was officially unveiled with a ribbon cutting ceremony on March 23, 2018.
After an extensive renovation project the Main Outpatient Pharmacy is now benefiting patients and Pharmacy staff alike.
“All of this happened without major disruption to patient care. Our beneficiaries had a lot of patience and understanding on everything that we’ve gone through to reach this point I get to do the ceremonial stuff in cutting the ribbon, but it’s our staff and the support of our partners, NAVFAC and RORE, who truly made this happen,” said Capt. Jeffrey Bitterman, NHB commanding officer.
The most immediate, noticeable, modification is that the number of windows to assist patients in picking up prescriptions has doubled from six to 12.
The project has also provided greater storage capacity and reconfigured the layout to provide maximum work-flow efficiency.
“All of this was put together for us at a very critical time. There’s a few people I’d like to recognize. Thanks especially to our patients. It’s been a true adventure for them, as well as our staff who continually put patient safety first,” said Lt. Cmdr. Dean Kang, Pharmacy Department head. “This project has impacted our efficiency and effectiveness for the better. There has been a lot of behind the scenes work taking place for this day to happen. There are many to single out, such as Sharon Marker, contractor RORE, Navy Facilities Northwest (NAVFAC), NHB’s Facilities and project manager Gary Crist, Information Management Department, Safety Department, and especially the leadership from our commanding officer, executive officer and command master chief. We could not do this without.”
According to Crist, the scope of work included not just renovation but also internal expansion. Every aspect of the project - demolition, additions, shifting working environment and temporary displacement of the pharmacy staff - had to be accomplished without significant interruption to services.
NHB’s Outpatient Pharmacy filled 489,181 prescriptions last year.
Some of the overlapping challenges in the project were managing the constant staff and work space movement within the pharmacy in all phases of the construction. The service windows were impacted, along with the storage cabinets, medicine robots, administrative offices and vault. There was also the need to coordinate for major outages and evolutions that involved multiple parties in the renovation project such as NHB’s Information Management and Facilities Management departments, cabinet and electrical manufacturers, pharmacy management system SCRIPT PRO, Base Operating Support Contracts group and NAVFAC.
In conjunction with the renovation project, Crist was recognized with an NHB ‘On-the-Spot’ award for his outstanding service serving as the project manager overseeing the construction and successful completion of the complex project, which required all phases of construction to be completed without disrupting service to more than 300 daily customers.
“Crist’s personal engagement and attention to detail were critical to keep the project moving forward. He expertly coordinated outages, conducted spot inspections, ensured proper quality on each construction activity and assisted on every field resolution. His commitment to excellent customer service is greatly appreciated, and his efforts have contributed significantly to the mission accomplishment and effectiveness of NHB. I offer my sincere thanks for a ‘job well done,’” shared Bitterman.
