Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport

The Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport Marine Mammal Monitoring on Navy Ranges (M3R) Team has won the National Association of Environmental Professionals (NAEP) Award in the Best Available Environmental Technology category. The NAEP award program recognizes an organization's outstanding environmental contributions.

Members of the team include: Peter Hulton, Sarah Blackstock, Bert Neales, Jessica Fothergill, Nancy DiMarzio, Karin Dolan, Ronald Morrissey, Thomas Fetherston, Greg Juselis, Elena McCarthy, Lynn Merten, David Moretti, Scott Fisher, Jessica Shaffer, Susan Jarvis and Stephanie Watwood.

The M3R program has leveraged Navy expertise in acoustic signal processing and submarine tracking to develop novel approaches to study vocalizing marine mammals in-situ. The team has developed marine mammal passive acoustic detection, classification, localization and density estimation algorithms and systems that are being applied to the study of the effect of mid-frequency active sonar on cetaceans (such as whales, dolphins, or porpoises). They developed a signal processor architecture that provides real-time monitoring of Navy undersea hydrophone arrays at the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center, the Southern California Offshore Range and the Pacific Missile Range Facility.

The M3R systems are being used to monitor vocalizing animals and sonar in real-time and to inform multiple studies focused on determining the behavioral response of animals to sonar, their abundance over time, and the population level effect of repeated sonar exposure. These results are critical to ongoing environmental compliance requirements.

The M3R Team was honored at the NAEP Annual Conference March 14 in Tacoma, Wash.

NUWC Division Newport, part of NAVSEA, is one of two divisions of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. NUWC Division Newport’s mission is to provide research, development, test and evaluation, engineering and fleet support for submarines, autonomous underwater systems, undersea offensive and defensive weapons systems, and countermeasures. NUWC’s other division is located in Keyport, Wash.
