3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, “Greywolf,” 1st Cavalry Division announced its 2018 Sullivan Cup Team on Monday.

The crew of Staff Sgt. Corey Senf, Spec. Damon Hickernell, Spec. Cody Campany and Pfc. Malachi Wingate from A Co., 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment was chosen from among eighty-four total crews to represent the brigade at the Sullivan Cup competition at Fort Benning, Georgia from April 30 to May 4.

“I’m very excited. It’s a good thing to represent the brigade and our battalion and company,” said Senf, the tank commander. “We are definitely ready and prepared, and we are going to continue training to give it our all. I think we have a great chance of winning.”

The crews were narrowed down from eight-four to just four, one from each battalion, during gunnery crew qualifications last month. The 3-8 CAV team scored a 10 out of 10 on target engagements with a 926 out of 1000 total score.

The four remaining crews then competed against each other in physical fitness, call for fire and gunnery skills testing to see who would represent the Brigade at the Sullivan Cup.

"It was pretty difficult, we had a lot great competition so we gave it our best. We tried to prepare as best as we could for it," Senf said. "When it came to the pt, we were pretty fatigued but we gave it our all and worked out for us."

The 2018 Sullivan Cup Best Tank Crew Competition is hosted by the Maneuver Center of Excellence, the U.S. Army Armor School and the 316th Cavalry Brigade.

The competition is a physically and mentally demanding world-class event that rigorously tests U.S. Army Soldiers, Marines, and International Partners in tank crew maneuver, sustainment and gunnery skills.

“It’s a great honor to be a part of the crew to represent the brigade,” said Campany, the loader. “All the training we did, we just got out of gunnery and our PT (physical training) set us above everyone else. I am very excited. I never thought I would get a chance to do something like this.”

Each four-man team will cycle through events including a physical challenge; adjusting and aligning the tank’s sites; gunnery and offensive and defensive maneuvering. They will receive points based on their time, precision and ability to complete the event.

“What we learn from this, training up for it and during the competition, we are able to bring back to the force and train our Soldiers, and I think it actually helps our overall readiness, because we are taking what we learned from this competition and we are bringing it back,” said Senf. “It’s not just as a crew, but the company the battalion, and hopefully the brigade.”

The team has already begun Sullivan Cup specific training that will continue for the next few weeks.
