Training Support Center (TSC) San Diego wrapped up Women’s History Month with a ceremony March 22.

Following this year's national observance theme "Honoring Women Who Fight All Forms of Discrimination," TSC San Diego celebrated achievements by women and the central role they have played in the nation's history.

"It’s important that we take time to reflect on the barriers that women in our nation overcame," said Navy Career Counselor 1st Class Aaron Freudenberg. "We can take these lessons learned and move forward in ensuring that we solidify equal opportunity throughout the Navy.”

Sailors from the TSC San Diego diversity committee invited Command Master Chief Veronica Holliday from USS New Orleans (LPD 18) to be the guest speaker. Holliday, a native of Durango, Mexico, enlisted in the Navy in 1995 as an aviation boatswain’s mate (handling).

“My first duty station was in Naples, Italy. I was assigned to a work center made of all males and found myself having to prove that I could do the job,” said Holliday, reflecting on her tour as the T-Line ramp supervisor in the Naval Support Activity Naples operations department. “My leading petty officer told me that just because I was a female, I should not expect to have things handed to me on a silver platter. I was expected to work twice as hard as my male counterparts.”

Holliday discussed how she overcame obstacles she faced as a woman by being diligent in her work and demonstrating professional expertise throughout her career.

“The one thing I could do was show my work ethic,” said Holliday. “I showed that I belonged aboard that ship just as any male.”

Her assignments at sea included service aboard USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) as the training petty officer for V-1 division; USS Howard (DDG 83) as the command career counselor and leading chief petty officer for the executive department; and Expeditionary Strike Group 3 as the command career counselor.

Holliday concluded her speech by recognizing women who went before her and the contributions and sacrifices they made to ensure equality for women in the U.S. armed forces.
