In reality, these diverse heroes are everyday Airmen who get together each week and take part in a role-playing adventure game each week at the base library for the Dungeons and Dragons, or DnD, club.
This scenario is far from abnormal within this club, which allows Airmen from different units to explore the limitations of the fantasy role-playing game world.
“Dungeons and Dragons is a game where you create a shared adventure with your friends,” said Staff Sgt. Douglas Eaton, 100th Force Support Squadron military postal clerk. “There are dice you roll to determine the outcome of actions, and one person acts as the Dungeon Master who guides the other players, who are the adventurers, through their quests. The limits of your adventure are determined only by the imagination.”
Eaton co-founded the DnD club with hopes of bringing more Airmen together on base to play the adventure game.
“I started this club because when our old DM left, we all wanted to continue rolling dice together,” Eaton said. “We only had a few players, so we were looking for more to join in. When I saw the email about starting up base clubs, I figured it was the best opportunity to get the word out. I am passionate about this game and want to share that with others and show them DnD can be anything we make it.”
The DnD club was created as part of the new “Connect” initiative on base, with the intent that Airmen will form clubs for people with mutual interests.
“’Connect’ is all inclusive; it’s open to Airmen of all ranks, but is aimed at junior enlisted Airmen, especially those living in the dorms on base,” said Master Sgt. Thomas Quinton, 100th Civil Engineer Squadron electrics shop NCO in charge and “Connect” coordinator. “The goal is to get them out of their comfort zone, to meet up and get to know each other, and get involved with something they enjoy or that they are missing from home.”
The DnD club is one of many new clubs created during the “Connect” initiative which has a directory that can be found on the RAF Mildenhall base website at www.mildehall.af.mil/Info/RAF-Mildenhall-Connect/
