The 4th Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division participated in combat live-fires as a part of the Bulldog Focus training exercise at Orogrande Range Complex, New Mexico March 9, 2018.

“Currently, 4th Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment “Regulars” is conducting a combined arms live-fire exercise as the culminating event of six months of training in preparation for the National Training Center,” said Maj. Terron Wharton, the operations officer with the 4th Bn., 6th Inf. Regt. “What the combined arms live-fire exercise does is allow for a company commander to integrate direct, indirect and attack aviation fires as well as practicing fire distribution and control.”

The Regulars have been in the field since approximately Feb. 18, training under the Bulldog Focus exercise that is projected to last six weeks.

The Regulars began their training by completing gunnery tables to ensure that their crews met qualification standards, Wharton said. They also provided opposition forces support to 1st Battalion, 67th Armored Regiment, one of their sister battalions.

After the gunnery tables and support concluded, the Regulars trained to complete further exercises that replicate real world scenarios to prepare them for a rotation at the NTC and potential deployments.

“We conducted our own company Situational Training Exercise lanes consisting of urban breach and clearances of urban objectives,” Wharton said. “We culminated that training with the battalion STX lane which saw the entire battalion breach a tank ditch at the Combined Arms Collective Training Facility.”

The training conducted under Bulldog Focus is designed to prepare every component of 4th Bn., 6th Inf. Regt.

“When you’re training, you’re preparing for everything,” said Pfc. Huy Trinh, a tracked vehicle repairer with 4th Bn., 6th Inf. Regt. “It’s important so when you get on a vehicle, you don’t get confused. You learn how to use weapons.”

The Regulars train to facilitate communication between command teams and enlisted Soldiers, which is needed to effectively conduct missions.

“You learn how to talk to your commander and talk to your NCOs,” Trinh said. “I like where we are at right now.”

With a rotation at the NTC looming, it is crucial for Bulldog Focus training to be effective at maximizing each Soldier’s individual and collective skills.

“The commander’s intent for this battalion is to create a battalion of Soldiers that are highly flexible and agile, that are prepared to deploy at a moment’s notice, and at the end of the day are able to accomplish any mission that is given to them,” said Wharton. “I believe that at the end of this training the Regulars accomplished that.”
