The Fleet Liaison Office at Training Support Center (TSC) San Diego hosted afloat training officers and their assistants from the Pacific Fleet area during a quarterly training officer seminar March 15.

The event is designed to provide the latest tools and information on a wide array of topics for establishing long-range, continuous training readiness plans. Training officers have a key role in the continual process that every ship goes through in all Fleet Response Plan phases in accordance with the Surface Force Readiness Manual.

"We use these opportunities to connect with our counterparts in the fleet," said Lt. Kevin Frederick, TSC San Diego fleet liaison officer. "Our goal is to brief everyone on the most up-to-date information on formal Navy schools and courses."

The quarterly meetings are a collaborative effort between TSC San Diego; Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet (CNSP); local Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) learning sites; and Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR). Training officers from as far as Hawaii and the Pacific Northwest can come together to talk about questions and issues they all have through face-to-face interaction with TSC San Diego and NETC learning centers.

“The biggest takeaway we want training officers to get out of this event is that we are here to support them and help them be successful,” said Frederick. “Communication and coordination are so important throughout the entire training cycle.”

TSC San Diego briefed attendees on quota control in high-volume courses; statistics and advice on reducing missed training opportunities; and policies concerning course prerequisites. Updates to quota and orders management for Sailors enrolled in block learning, as part of Ready, Relevant Learning, were also covered.

CNSP's force training officer discussed the type commander (TYCOM) perspective, focusing on success tips, school waivers, and securing quotas.

“It is so helpful, being able to put a face to the name, to address my concerns and any questions I have regarding TYCOM or class requirements in person,” said Lt. j.g. Marissa George, USS Kidd (DDG 100) training officer. “All my questions are answered, and the presentations are organized and informative.”

Some of the local NETC schoolhouses participating included Surface Warfare Officers School, Information Warfare Training Command San Diego, Center for Security Forces, and Center for Surface Combat Systems. Schoolhouse representatives covered common challenges, current events, course changes, and overall training pipelines.

SPAWAR presented updates on training resources for Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence systems and shipboard equipment post-installation training.

"These seminars provide the chance to learn from training experts, in addition to other training officers across the fleet," said Maureen Caballero, director of TSC San Diego Training and Readiness Department. "It is a one-stop shop for conflict resolution, prerequisite clarification, and quota reservations."
