WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South senior Erika Zhang was the featured soloist at the U.S. Army Field Band concert in Tampa, Florida, on March 9, 2018. Zhang was selected as a soloist after winning The John Philip Sousa National Young Artist Solo Competition.
The purpose of the Sousa Young Artist Solo Competition is to identify, recognize and honor outstanding high school musicians who demonstrate a significantly high standard in performance.
Zhang is principle chair of her school wind ensemble and philharmonic orchestra, and has been a member of the Central Jersey Music Educators Association region band for four years and the New Jersey Music Educators Association state band for two years. Her first solo was playing the national anthem to open her 4th grade band concert, while her most recent endeavor prior to playing with the Army Field Band was the Copland Clarinet Concerto. When she is not rehearsing with an ensemble or blowing long tones, she likes to improvise unusual melodies and create remixes of century-old solos.
She will attend Wellesley College in the fall.
