Spiritual resiliency, along with mental, physical and social, are the four pillars that comprise the Comprehensive Airmen Fitness initiative intended on maximizing the whole Airman concept.

To bring awareness on the importance of spiritual wellness, Maj. Gen. Dondi Costin, the Chief of Chaplains Headquarters U.S. Air Force, visited MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, and spoke at a spiritual resiliency luncheon March 1, 2018.

The luncheon began with a rendition of the national anthem by Tinker Elementary School students, followed by various readings from different religious scriptures during the lunch service. The luncheon concluded with a speech from Costin, who spoke of how the Sermon on the Mount, generally considered as the foundation for ethical conduct, relates to every day life.

“The thing about this entire speech, which takes up about three chapters in this very old book,” said Costin, referring to the Bible. “Is that if you spent your entire life trying to master the words in these three chapters, you would be an amazing person.”

The Chief of Chaplains concluded his speech by linking the teachings of the sermon to the four pillars.

“Resiliency is nothing other than living your life,” said Costin. “It’s about building into your life skills so that when things happen, and they will, you have those skills to do whatever it takes.”

The event, hosted by the 6th Air Mobility Wing chapel, presented an opportunity for Team MacDill to come together in fellowship.

“I absolutely loved the references Maj. Gen. Costin made,” said Airman Samantha Martinez, an administration apprentice assigned to the 310th Airlift Squadron. “It made me realize that sometimes my focus needs to be balanced in all parts of my life, including my spiritual resiliency.”
