    181st Intelligence Wing

HULMAN FIELD AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Ind. — Seven Airmen assigned to the 181st Intelligence Wing earned first place in the Indiana National Guard Drill and Ceremony Competition March 3 at Camp Atterbury, Indiana.

The drill team from the 181st IW won the statewide competition, which consisted of four graded events including appearance, color guard, and armed and unarmed drill, by outperforming teams from other Indiana National Guard units.

The drill team members were Tech. Sgt. Kevin, Tech. Sgt. Christopher, Tech. Sgt. Kimberlee Wade, Staff Sgt. Carla, Staff Sgt. Maeghan Pilman, Staff Sgt. Lonnie Wiram, and Airman 1st Class Jessica Farkas.

The 181st IW Airmen competed against five teams Soldiers from the 2-150 Field Artillery Battalion, 1- 151 Infantry Battalion, 76th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 113th Engineer Battalion and 219th Engineer Brigade.

Joint Force Headquarters leadership recognized the Airmen for their efforts.

Bringing out the colors is important to the citizens of Indiana, said Maj. Gen. Courtney P. Carr, the Adjutant General of the Indiana National Guard. How you perform when you bring out our colors is how they see the military. Nothing is more important.

For the 181st IW drill team’s captain, the competition was the capstone to weeks of hard work.

There was a lot of excitement because we prepared hard by training for the competition, said Tech. Sgt. Keith. We started practicing three days a week, and then we switched to five days a week toward the end.

Tech. Sgt. Keith was grateful for the team’s dedication.

I personally appreciate everyone who participated, because they underwent all the training throughout the weeks and made lots of sacrifices.

Those sacrifices were recognized by others who watched the competition.

They did a good job, said Chief Master Sgt. Robert G. Beasley, the command chief of the 181st IW. It was a good experience to build on for future years.

Having returned to Hulman Field with the competition’s traveling trophy, the 181st IW drill team members now face a new challenge to keep it next year. If their performance in 2018 is any indication, they will be prepared to race to the occasion.
