“As part of the survey we inspect spaces to ensure personal protective devices are readily accessible to all employees in those work centers,” says Vaught. “We also interview employees regarding their concerns and questions about the safety of their workspace.”
Worksite visits are performed annually on tenant commands permanently attached to the NSA Naples Area of Responsibility. In the case of the USNS Carson City, this was as single event as it is not home ported in Gaeta.
“These visits provided a unique challenge to our team because we were dealing with multiple sets of guidelines,” says Vaught. “Both ships employ a mixed crew of active-duty Sailors and Military Sealift Command Mariners.”
This diverse environment means that policies, instructions, and standard operating procedures of the two organizations must be brought into consideration. The Occupational Medicine and Audiology representatives help clarify any conflict or ambiguity between the two different organizations with regards to ensuring worker safety.
In addition to the worksite visits, eight Military Sealift Command occupational medicine surveillance examinations were completed. This meant that mariners did not have to miss an entire day of work traveling to the Hospital at Support Site.
“Any time we can support our fleet and ensure the safety of our Sailors while also maintaining readiness is a win in our book,” says Vaught. “No matter where they are stationed, our team is committed to keeping warfighters in the fight.”
