WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (NNS) -- Expeditionary Combat Readiness Center (ECRC) conducted a remote mobilization for over 50 Sailors from Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group (NAVELSG) at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown, Cheatham Annex, Feb 26-Mar 2.

Reserve Sailors from ECRC on annual training led the mobilization process which normally occurs in Norfolk. The mobilization process usually takes about five days and involves preparing a Reserve Sailor for active duty.

Capt. Matthew Jackson, ECRC commanding officer said, "Mass mobilization planning and executing remote mobilizations are top priorities for ECRC. Mobilizing through remote sites has benefits for ECRC Navy Reserve MOB Units as well as for the deploying expeditionary forces because it allows our Reservists to gain real world experience and develop their mobilization skillsets.”

The remote mobilization of the Reserve Sailors in Williamsburg allowed ECRC to exercise and finesse the capability of Reservists assigned to ECRC's five reserve units. This remote mobilization was the first conducted at NAVELSG.

“These Reserve units can autonomously operate from Williamsburg or other CONUS sites and can exponentially increase throughput to the front line in the event of Major Combat Operations (MCO). To strategically operate from several locations is in the nature of expeditionary forces,” said Jackson.

The use of a location far-removed from Norfolk has many benefits and according to Jackson time is a huge factor and the remote mobilization on Cheatham Annex was a major benefit.

“NAVELSG, CRS or other expeditionary units gain the advantage of time. Time not spent in travel from Norfolk to Williamsburg or San Diego or Gulfport is time saved for training or other deployment readiness activities. The remote mobilization events benefit units and Sailors from the Corpsman checking records to the Logistic Specialist being briefed,” said Jackson.

ECRC’s mission is to provide oversight of the processing, equipping, training, deployment, in-theater support and re-deployment of over 3,500 Sailors in non-traditional, non-naval expeditionary missions in support of Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO).

NAVELSG is a vital enabler of Maritime Prepositioning, Joint Logistics Over The Shore operations, and maritime forces ashore providing expeditionary cargo handling services for surface, air, and terminal operations, tactical fueling, and ordnance handling/reporting in support of worldwide Naval, Joint, interagency, and combined forces/organization.
