FORT STEWART, Ga. – Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Grinston, the command sergeant major of the Army’s U.S. Forces Command, visited Fort Stewart to present the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 385th Military Police Battalion with the FORSCOM Readiness Trophy (Eagle Award) for their commitment to excellence, March 8.
The yearly award recognizes the best detachment for accomplishments and achievements encompassing every aspect of readiness directly relating to mission accomplishment.
“This is a big deal; only one detachment within FORSCOM receives this each year,” Grinston said.
The award is given within the military police community to the best military police detachment, the best military police company and the best canine detachment. Sgt. 1st Class Thomas Morgan, detachment sergeant, said this is the first time his detachment has received the award in all its lineage.
“It was a huge deal for our Soldiers to see that the award was important on the strategic level and the fact that we push readiness all the time and that is exactly what he talked about – that you have to take care of individual readiness just to do your job,” said Morgan.
Categories considered during the selection process include weapons qualification; military and civilian education; training assessments; medical and physical readiness; individual and unit awards and unit discipline.
“The award is given based up on our accomplishments as far as training, readiness to deploy, medical readiness, personnel readiness, you name it, as far as detachments go across FORSCOM,” Morgan said.
Morgan said one of the detachment’s notable accomplishments of the past year was their certification training to become part of the Army's Defense Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and High-yield Explosives Response Force. Those involved are trained for 12 months to respond within the continental United States if there were to be a mass CBRNE incident.
Morgan said his unit is the only military police detachment on the mission.
Grinston conducted physical training with the detachment as they ran the Marne Mile and performed several exercises. He also spent the entire morning answering questions and talking to Soldiers about promotions, junior enlisted Soldiers’ living conditions, budget priorities of the Army, schooling opportunities, empowering noncommissioned officers and about his experience in Ranger School.
Grinston also paid a visit to the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division and walked through the different tasks of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle gunnery skills test. He recognized several Soldiers in the ABCT for their outstanding achievements and talked to female combat engineer Soldiers about improvements they wish to see in the Army.
