593rd ESC Leads the Movement Effort

JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, WA, UNITED STATES

Story by Sgt. 1st Class Miriam Espinoza

    593rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command

The 593rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command Transportation Branch conducted mobility training Jan. 26 to Jan. 28 to expand the knowledge of Unit Movement Officers on moving their unit from one place to another.
The course taught 25 UMOs the hands-on of what it takes to plan, coordinate and move their units for deployment, re-deployment and training exercises.

“The things we are focusing on during this 3-day course are things that are not covered during the 2-week UMO course, like hands-on,” said Sgt. 1st Class Lorna E. Zunic, Highway movement NCO, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 593rd ESC. “We are also teaching them specific requirements for JBLM when it comes to shipping equipment from here to other areas.”

The Soldiers in attendance learned how to navigate websites that are in place to help them coordinate their unit’s planned move, document their equipment, label equipment and request mode of transportation.

They learned the importance of coordinating early with the several entities involved in moving a single unit. Soldiers also learned proper accountability procedures that minimize damage and loss of equipment, said Zunic.

“Paperwork is one of the biggest issues, when sensitive items are not identified correctly and they are lost or damaged that can cost the unit and government money,” said Zunic. “We are trying to alleviate that with this training.”

Movement requirements differ from installation to installation based on resources available to move equipment.

“Learning the rules and regulations that apply here on JBLM is useful so everything is done the way it needs to get done,” said Sgt. Brian K. Williams, A Company. 47th Combat Support Hospital.

Twenty five Soldiers from the ESC, who are currently serving as UMOs in their units, attended the training. Some of the Soldiers in attendance had not yet attended the 2-week UMO course, which is also offered here on JBLM.

“The course was designed to help the Soldiers who have not had the time to go to Virginia for the course help their units a lot quicker,” said Zunic.

“It was a nice mix between the technical side and the actual hands on portion,” said 2nd Lt. Edward J. Andrews Jr., 523rd Composite Truck Company, 13th Combat Sustainment Support Bn.

This was the first time the ESC has conducted this course, but there are plans for future courses that would involve UMOs from across the installation.

“I hope this course has provided the tools necessary to help with the movement process. I want them to understand why packing, labeling, and tracking their unit equipment is important,” said Zunic.
