Members of the 136th Security Forces Squadron, Texas Air National Guard, will compete in the 2018 Texas Military Department Best Warrior Competition from February 28 to March 4 at Camp Swift, Texas.
The Best Warrior Competition brings together junior enlisted and noncommisioned officers from the Texas Air and Army National Guards. Over the course of three days, members undergo a series of mental and physical challenges testing their tactical and technical expertise through scored events.
Tech. Sgt. Timothy Rooney and Senior Airman Chase Barnett, 136th Security Forces Squadron members, were selected for the 2018 competition.
“To get ready for this competition they had to compete with other members of the wing first,” said Chief Master Sgt. Edward Walden, 136th Airlift Wing command chief. “They had to complete an obstacle course, rucksack run, a board and an essay. From those scores, they were chosen to represent the wing.”
The Texas Air National Guard began competing in the Best Warrior Competition in 2013 in an effort to improve rapport between the Army and Air National Guard units.
“Seeing it grow this way does my heart well,” said Chief Master Sgt. Michael Cornitius, Texas Air National Guard command chief. “We’re trying to build teams by coming together with people we don’t normally work with. We have our state partners here, our bretheren in the Army, and quite a few other representives from the air side. Here, we get to intermingle and help each other, and the relationships we’re building now will pay dividends for us in the future.”
