Starting more than two decades ago, the month of March has been dedicated to honor the struggles and achievements of women throughout history.

On March 2, 2018, the Women’s History Month committee at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, began the observance month with a “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event.

The event began with a few words from the 6th Air Mobility Wing commander, Col. April Vogel, which led straight into a one-mile walk to signify how women overcame many types of discrimination throughout history.

“This event was designed to educate participants on the mental, physical and spiritual fitness that women possess,” said Master Sgt. Rosie Bevel, the superintendent for the 6th AMW Judge Advocates office and committee lead. “Participants walked in women's shoes, and carried weights in a backpack to symbolize the struggles women can sometimes face.”

There were various personnel throughout base who participated in the event and even trekked the mile in women’s heels.
“I wore my wife’s heels that were way too small for my feet,” chuckled Airman 1st Class Parker Stewart, a budget analyst assigned to the 6th Comptroller Squadron. “At one point during the walk, I stopped to sit to take them off but I was encouraged to push through the pain.

“The only thing I will say, is to not mess with anyone wearing heels, they are no joke and hurt beyond all measure!”

Aside from this kickoff event, a living museum event is slated to take place at the base chapel on March 22.

“The living museum will showcase women from MacDill who will represent and roleplay influential women throughout our past, present, and future,” added Bevel. “Each representative will design an educational booth, dress as the woman they are portraying, and recite a 15-30 second script detailing the story of the woman being portrayed.

Every year, the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute generates a different theme for special observance months. This year, the theme is “Honoring Women Who Fight All Forms of Discrimination.”

“It’s important to acknowledge the challenges that women can sometimes face, and to celebrate the accomplishments that may otherwise go unnoticed all while promoting equality among men and women,” Bevel said with a smile. “The Women’s History Month committee looks forward to the support from Team MacDill in celebrating women’s history 2018.”
