Students from Delalio Elementary School built and showcased their cardboard games to their parents and teachers on Marine Corps Air Station New River, Feb. 21, 2018. The students participated in The Global Cardboard Challenge, a program that has students create arcade games out of cardboard.

“We kick it off with the video of the young man who inspired this event because a lot of times my students think that inventors are just adults and don’t understand that they can be kids,” said Kara Ball, grade four and five multi-age teacher at Delalio Elementary School. “A lot of times it’s difficult to see yourself in that role if you don’t see somebody like yourself. We show them a nine year old that is inventing then all of a sudden they start to see the possibilities.”

Students from kindergarten through fifth grade participated and each student worked in their grade level. They got into teams to create a plan for what their cardboard game will look like. The children were given four hours to create what they designed with the help of volunteers.

“We helped sort out cardboard boxes for the students and once we had the kids with us we went into groups and paired with them to build arcade games,” said Pfc. Quinten Musser, volunteer from Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 29. “All the designs came from them; all we did was cut boxes and tape.”

The students were also tasked with making rules, naming and setting how difficult the game will be. To play an arcade game a participant needed to supply a token that cost two dollars and the prize for winning a game was more tokens.

Parents and teachers walked the gymnasium and cafeteria playing each game they came across until the event was over.

“We want school to be a place where kids come excited to learn and a lot of people tell me how my elementary kids are going to do great things in the future,” said Ball. “They can do those things now.”
