    310th Expeditionary Sustainment Command

As demands for combat readiness increase throughout the Army Reserve, staff members of the 310th Expeditionary Sustainment Command (ESC) dedicate efforts to drum readiness into designated units to meet requirements to rapidly deploy.

From Feb. 6-9, staff members executed a virtual Deployment Readiness Exercise (DRE), assisting units with meeting requirements to enhance and sustain their readiness. The goal of the exercise is to ensure units are ready for what may come and mobilize swiftly. Units participating in the DRE are expected to attend the upcoming Bridge-Combat Support Training Exercise (CSTX), a realistic, austere combat training event, at Fort Knox, Ky., next month.

During the DRE, staff members discussed significant deployment requirements with the members of the 705th Transportation Company, out of Dayton, Ohio, via teleconference. Instead of traveling to Ohio to conduct the training, staff members utilized management software and slides to conduct the exercise.

“The DRE places an emphasis on individual Soldier readiness. Virtually we can pull everything from our level to derive a level of confidence that a unit would be administratively or individually ready to deploy,” said Capt. James “Jay” Horner, 310th ESC Personnel Management officer.

Understanding how imperative it is to get Soldiers ready for what may come acted as the catalyst for the 705th to meet requirements in areas of transportation and movement. “We did a Level 1 DRE to make sure the unit had a unit movement plan assigned, unit movement personnel and unit movement officers, HZMAT and other requisites. The main objective is to determine whether the unit has the capability to get to mobilization station or mobilize,” said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Denrick Mills, the mobility officer.

The challenge for USAR Soldiers is adjusting to the amplified readiness standards. The recent demands are changing the culture for Soldiers as some say they have never seen this type of initiative before, not even when forces were engaged in Iraq and Afghanistan. “It was expected units would deploy and fall in on pre-position stock or theater-provided equipment. You weren’t told to load all your property items and put it on a truck. Now with the DRE, it’ basically a practice to get you to load up your equipment and get it ready for deployment,” said Mills.

“The exercise was about our readiness numbers, and getting us prepared, not for Bridge-CSTX, but in case of a mobilization. So the past couple of days the 310th staff did the virtual DRE with my unit and figured out what they could fix,” said 1st Lt. Katherine Maher, 705th TC company commander. “We’ve been in pretty good shape, but there is still a few things we need to track. But, it’s nice to get the overview of everything. I am feeling confident.”

For Soldiers, the DRE and upcoming CSTX are shaping the USAR into a faster, more capable, greater lethal force, according to leadership. “This is a very fast tempo to maintain for readiness, equipment, medical, fulltime unit staff time, and increased Soldier commitment. It’s a challenge to be ready, but not really a challenge because this is the type of thing we are doing now,” said Master Sgt. Gerald Ryan, Senior Truck Master 705th TC .
