Naval Submarine School (NSS) recognized Kerry Cook as the 2017 Civilian of the Year Feb. 26.
Cook is a member of the Training Support Department (TSD) and supports apprentice and advanced training for a variety of enlisted submarine ratings.
NSS Commanding Officer Capt. Aaron Thieme praised Cook's efforts supporting technical ratings for NSS through student management utilizing Corporate Enterprise Training Activity Resource Systems (CeTARS).
"She supported over 75 individual courses, processed over 1,400 class convenings and graduations, 5,065 enrollments and graduations, and directly supported an average of 1,400 individual Sailors annually," said Thieme. "She continued to perform not only her assigned duties, but also those of a vacant employee position.”
Cook said the most rewarding part of her job is the day-to-day interaction she has with staff and students. She was both surprised and delighted to be selected as the NSS COY.
"We have so many deserving staff members, that it is an honor to even be considered, to say nothing of being selected."
In 2017, NSS graduated over, 66,000 Sailors from 157 different courses.
Naval Submarine School's mission is to train officers and enlisted Sailors in basic knowledge and skills which submarine commands in the Atlantic and Pacific can build upon to develop competence and proficiency in operating and maintaining submarines and all their systems; provide functional, refresher, advanced, and team training to submarine and submarine support personnel to increase and maintain knowledge and proficiency in specific skills; furnish specific operationally oriented support to submarines to ensure maximum effectiveness of their sensor systems and perform all other training and sensor support as required.
The Submarine Learning Center's mission is to create, coordinate and execute the future training and education vision for the Submarine Force. It is accountable for all undersea curriculums, training delivery methodologies, and for developing and maintaining professional development continuums for all undersea warfare officers and ratings to include electronics technician (communications and navigation), fire control technician, sonar technician, machinist's mate (auxiliary and weapons), missile technician, and all nuclear training ratings.
