SALT LAKE CITY (February 21, 2018) - Unfortunately there are people with bad intentions who want to hurt and harm others. With training and education, the likelihood and severity of active shooter events can be reduced.
On 26 January, 2018, Army and Navy reserve units at Fort Douglas, Utah combined forces with University of Utah (U of U) Police Department to conduct Active Shooter training and heighten awareness about actions that should be taken in the event of an active shooter situation.
The training started in a classroom environment and was followed by two scenario based events in which one of the police officers played the role of active shooter and the trainees responded in their real life roles as police officers, Soldiers, Sailors and civilians.
“It’s all about muscle memory and a situation like an active shooter is going to happen very fast, so you need to know how to get out, hide out and take out,” said Stuart Moffat, Associate Director of Emergency Management for the U of U. “And the only way you can develop that skill is to go through the training.”
This type of training is relevant for everyone, including school children, said Sergeant Jack Fermanian, from U of U Police Department. There are several different Homeland Security campaigns that are focused on the whole community, for example, ‘Run, Hide, Fight’ and ‘See Something, Say Something.’ More information can be found at link https://www.dhs.gov/ .
“We can do this at work, at home, at worship locations, at a movie theater, etc.,” said Master Sgt. Lindsay Buck, from the 807th Medical Command (Deployment Support) military intelligence office. “We need to be ready to response at anytime and anywhere.”
