ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. - The two buildings that will become the headquarters complex for the 20th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives (CBRNE) Command on APG North are more than 40 percent complete with planned occupancy in mid-2019.

The $73 million project is renovating 186,000 square feet in buildings 5016 and 5046 at the corner of Havre de Grace Street and Cyber Road on APG North.

“I am looking forward to the completion of these projects and then moving into our new areas,” said Brig. Gen. James Bonner, a native of Anna, Ill., and commander of the 20th CBRNE Command. “I know this has been a long time in coming. This project highlights the importance that U.S. Forces Command, and the Army, place on our mission and people.”

The 94,000 square foot headquarters building 5016 will include the command suite, multiple staff offices, an operations center, briefing and conference rooms and a high-bay storage area. Across the street, the 92,000 square foot building 5046 will include various staff offices, the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, and a high-bay storage area. The two-building complex will hold approximately 270 military personnel and 100 civilians and contractors who will continue to support the worldwide missions of this one-of-a-kind Army command.

Currently, the command’s personnel are located throughout nine different buildings on the Edgewood Area of APG.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, awarded the construction contract to Whiting Turner in January 2016. The corps manages the contract and oversees construction progress in constant coordination with the 20th and the APG department of public works.

“Office spaces in both buildings are already identified on the architectural drawings used by the construction crews,” said Maj. Sam Olan, project engineer for the 20th. “Later this year and in coordination with the 20th, the U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center, Huntsville Furnishings Program will use its expertise to purchase the administrative furnishings for both buildings.” See their work at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcIYSll4gec.

In May 2017, the command, in coordination with Whiting Turner, the corps’ Baltimore District, and leaders from APG and Harford County, held a Topping of Steel celebration. This construction project milestone gave stakeholders and visitors the opportunity to sign the final piece of structural steel. It was then hoisted into place right above the front entrance for building 5016.

The 20th CBRNE Command is the Department of Defense’s premier CBRN and EOD organization and provides highly specialized technical capabilities to defeat the full spectrum of CBRN and explosive ordnance hazards at home and abroad. The Command includes more than 3,400 military and civilian personnel posted across 19 installations in 16 states.
