SHREVEPORT, La. – For the second year, Troops from 2nd Squadron, 108th Cavalry Regiment took time out of their daily schedules to read to the children at Lake Bethlehem Baptist Church Head Start Center in Shreveport, La.
"It's exciting for the kids to see real Soldiers and it also gives them a chance to see that Soldiers are friendly," said Tina Strickland of Shreveport, La., an instructor at the center.
The center has Head Start Awareness Week annually with each day having a different theme to help educate the children, who range in age from three to five. The theme for the day was "Red, White and Blue," with the children learning about the American flag and the nation's colors.
"I enjoyed reading to the kids, it helps show the National Guard's community involvement efforts," said Staff Sgt. Gralin D. Gassiot, of Shreveport, La., 2/108th training noncommissioned officer.
The children gathered around the Soldiers as they were read some of their favorite stories and then eagerly asked questions and laughed with the Soldiers. The Troops sat in tiny chairs while reading to the children and kept their attention by being animated and showing pictures on each page.
During arts and crafts time, Soldiers also helped the children with cutting and pasting and assembling different red, white and blue projects. At the end of the day the children told the Soldiers thank you, and hugged them and shook their triple-sized hands to show their appreciation.
"The kids were very enthusiastic and it was rewarding to be able to spend positive quality time with the youth of today," said Sgt. 1st Class Gerald H. Giles, of Bossier City, La., 2/108th.
