Story by Lance Cpl. Andrew Jones

    III Marine Expeditionary Force

KORAT AIR FORCE BASE, Kingdom of Thailand (Feb. 15, 2018) – U.S. Marine units Marine Wing Support Squadron 171, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 251 and Wing 1, Royal Thai Air Force, conducted a scheduled arrested landing training during Exercise Cobra Gold 2018 at Korat Air Force Base, Kingdom of Thailand, Feb. 12, 2018.

A pilot from VMFA-251 dropped the tail-hook of a Marine F/A-18C Hornet to slow the aircraft when it landed, simulating failure of the aircrafts brakes.

Expeditionary Fire Rescue and Expeditionary Air Field Marines from MWSS-171, and aircraft rescue and firefighting airmen from Wing-1, RTAF, worked together for the success of the training.

“I feel like it went extremely successful,” said U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Kyle Everhart, an EFR Marine with MWSS-171, who is a native of Cloverdale, Indiana. “It’s our first time working with (RTAF firefighters), and we all just went out there and did our thing. We worked smoothly as a team, and we were able to get the job done quickly and effectively and didn’t have any hiccups.”

EFR and EAF are the first to respond when an emergency occurs on an airfield, and their effectiveness can save lives and aircraft.

“There is a lot that can go wrong but we take all the extra precautions to make sure that it doesn’t,” said U.S. Marine Cpl. Dakota Daniels, an EAF technician with MWSS-171, who is a native of Antioch, Illinois. “If something goes wrong on our side it’s more than just our gear breaking, it’s potentially a pilot’s life and an aircraft for the Marine Corps. Our job is pretty important to keeping this operation going.”

Cobra Gold 2018 is the 37th iteration of the Thai-U.S. co-sponsored exercise and represents the long-standing friendship that the two countries share. The exercise presents a unique opportunity for allied countries to advance interoperability and increase the capacity of partner nations with the common goal of peace and regional security.
