Lt. Gen. Lawrence Nicholson, Commanding General, III Marine Expeditionary Force, ceremoniously laid a wreath at the Royal Thai Marine Corps Memorial Feb. 14, to pay his respects to the Royal Thai Marines who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

“At the moment 621 Marines, who died to protect our country’s sovereignty, rest in peace,” said Cmdr. Khanitpong Wongwisate, the chief of counterintelligence assigned to the Royal Thai Marine Corps Headquarters. “The Marines Corps Monument was founded by a collaboration of Marines and civilians to contain the ashes and souls of Marine warriors.”

Thai and U.S. forces stood shoulder to shoulder commemorating the monument on The Royal Thai Marine Command in Chonburi province, Thailand.

The ceremony, lasting just over 15 minutes, was imbued in tradition. The Royal Thai Marine Band Platoon assigned to the Support Regiment on the Royal Thai Marine Command provided music for the occasion and also played Maharoek, a ceremonial anthem for solemn occasions.

The Royal Thai Marine Command is home to the military training of Royal Thai Marines. A company of NCO’s in training attended the ceremony and performed drill movements and rifle salutes. The memorial is steps away from Toey Ngam Beach where the company gathered just before their performance.

“This monument was erected as an honor and remembrance to those who have fallen in battle as Marines,” is inscribed in Thai on the monument overlooking the wreath laid by Lt. Gen. Lawrence Nicholson.
