177th Fighter Wing - NJ Air National Guard

Lt. Gen. L. Scott Rice, Air National Guard director, and Chief Master Sgt. Ronald C. Anderson, command chief master sergeant of the ANG, visited several areas including the 177th Force Support Squadron, 227th Air Support Operations Squadron, 177th Medical Group, 119th Fighter Squadron, Aircrew Flight Equipment section and Aircraft Maintenance Squadron to interact with Airmen and get a closer look at base operations.

“You are the strategic advantage that General Rice and I talk about,” said Anderson. “Thank you for the credibility you bring to the fight... The active component can’t get enough of what you guys do. They want more.”

Rice and Anderson recognized several 177th Airmen for their outstanding performance and presented them with their personal coins.

“Keep up the good work, keep after it,” said Rice. “Your quiet professionalism and humility is the tip of the spear to our success.”

During their tour, Rice and Anderson also got a first-hand look at how the wing’s Airmen accomplish their mission. In the Aircrew Flight Equipment section, Chief Master Sgt. Jason L. Gioconda, AFE superintendent, showed them the Helmet Mounted Integrated Targeting System that the wing’s F-16 fighter pilots use.

“The Air Force gives us exceptional equipment to work with,” said Rice. “We then have the exceptional people working side by side, using that equipment.”

Rice also complimented the wing’s leadership on the 177th’s recent success during its 2017 deployment to the Republic of Korea as part of a Theater Security Package, enhancing regional stability and providing a deterrent against threats to the region.

“What a difference this wing has made overseas in Korea,” said Rice. “I’ve received compliments for this unit from all over. Your quiet professionalism is motivating and making a difference.”
