Hours have changed for the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society Thrift Store aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Calif. and they are currently seeking additional volunteers.

“As a volunteer, you have to opportunity to: Gain confidence; Make a difference in the lives of military personnel aboard the installation; Meet various people from all walks of life; Be part of a community; Learn new skills; Take on a challenge,” explained Gunnery Sgt. Justin Kratzer, Marine liaison for NMCRS. “As it stands there are three permanent volunteers. We also have Reserve Marines who volunteer at the thrift store. However, that is not a permanent fixture as they are due to rotate back to their main units.”

Located at the east end of Warehouse 3 on base, the store offers a wide variety of items.

“We offer clothing, cookware, shoes, toys, DVDs, and books,” said Samantha Cummins, a Marine wife, secretary for Housing Maintenance Office, and volunteer at the store. “We also have uniform pieces and the dress blue uniform pieces are free if a Marine comes in wearing their uniform. We also have electronics, jewelry, Christmas and Halloween decorations and more.”

At this time the hours of operation are Wednesdays and Fridays from 3-5 p.m., but with additional volunteers, there would be more opportunities to open the store, explained Kratzer.

“All monetary funds received through the Thrift Store are forwarded back to the NMCRS Headquarters in Camp Pendleton,” Kratzer said. “From there, the money is used to allocate funds for loans and provide additional services (i.e., Baby Boot Camp, interest-free loans) as requested.”

In addition to the benefits mentioned above, Cummins also enjoys the act of giving back to military families.

If you would like to drop off donations or become a volunteer, stop by the store during its open hours and speak with the Chair of Volunteers, Alma Martinez, wife of Sgt. Maj. Sergio MartinezRuiz, or contact Gunnery Sgt. Justin Kratzer at 577-6194.
