    19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command

USAG Daegu, Korea- Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, held a change of responsibility ceremony, Jan. 30 at the Kelly Fitness Center, Camp Walker, Daegu. Korea.

1st Sgt. Johanna Y. Castro, the outgoing senior enlisted leader of HHC, 19th ESC, and a native of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, relinquished her responsibilities as the unit’s senior enlisted leader to 1st Sgt. Cristian G. Solano, a native of Loja, Ecuador.

Many Area IV community members attended the change of responsibility ceremony, which was full of military heritage and symbolism as Soldiers stood tall, exhibiting their discipline in final deference to their outgoing leader.

During a traditional passing of the colors ceremony, Castro handed the company guidon to the HHC, 19th ESC commander, Capt. Michael C. King, a native of Mount Vernon, Ohio, signifying her last act as the company First Sergeant. King then handed the guidon to Solano, entrusting him to the care of the company and its troops, and solidifying the change of responsibility between the two First Sergeants.

After the passing of the colors ceremony was over, King took a moment to address those in attendance.

“1st Sgt. Castro led the way for HHC, whether it was training exercises such as Ulchi Freedom Guardian, Courageous Channel, War Fighter, or Forward Command Post deployment operations,” said King. “Her leadership, guidance and poise were instrumental in all the successes of HHC during her tenure as First Sergeant.”

King also capitalized on the moment to endorse Solano’s reputation, assuring the troops they were receiving a fully qualified leader.

“I’ve heard nothing but great things about 1st Sgt. Solano’s abilities,” said King. “He respects and values this team, and I have no doubt he will bring great ideas and enthusiasm to HHC.”

Castro echoed King’s remarks regarding Solano, and also publicly addressed her troops one last time during the event.

“I would like to take a moment to recognize the Soldiers in formation who do all the hard work while we get most of the credit,” said Castro. “I just want to say thank you to every single one of you, for all you do for this company and for our Army.”

Immediately after, Solano addressed the unit for the first time. He then walked to the front of the formation and took his rightful place next to the company guidon, beginning a new chapter as the company’s newest First Sergeant. Those in attendance then sang the Eighth United States Army song and the Army song before the ceremony came to an end.
