    Idaho Army National Guard

    Col. Farin D. Schwartz was appointed commander, Idaho Army National Guard/Assistant Adjutant General – Army on Jan. 7 by Brig. Gen. Michael J. Garshak, commander, Idaho National Guard.

    “I’m very honored and humbled by this appointment,” Schwartz said. “This is something I aspired to, but never thought would come to fruition. I want to do a good job and not let any Soldiers of the Idaho Army National Guard down.”

    Schwartz has served his entire military career in the Idaho Army National Guard. He grew up in Mud Lake, a small town outside of Idaho Falls with a population of 386, and enlisted into the organization in 1984. He earned his commission from Idaho State University’s ROTC program in 1988 as an armor officer.

    As commander of the Idaho Army National Guard, Schwartz is responsible for the training and readiness of Idaho’s 3,000 Citizen-Soldiers.

    “Col. Schwartz is a dynamic and engaged leader who inspires confidence and competence in his fellow Soldiers,” Garshak said. “I am excited for the future of the Idaho Army National Guard.”

    Schwartz most recently served as the 116th Calvary Brigade Combat Team commander before his current appointment. The 116th CBCT is the largest National Guard unit in the state and is spread out across 20 communities in the state with elements in Montana, Nevada and Oregon.

    Throughout his career he served as commander of the Installation Support Unit, the 1-148th Field Artillery Battalion, the Recruiting and Retention Battalion, and Service Battery, 1-148th Field Artillery Battalion.

    Schwartz was the 1-148th Field Artillery Battalion commander for the unit’s deployment to Iraq in 2010-2011 in support of Operation New Dawn. He was the unit’s operations officer on its deployment in 2004-2005 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom III.

    Schwartz lives in Meridian with his wife, Sheri. They have three adult children, Idaho Army National Guard 1st Sgt. Cole Schwartz, Cami Rebmann and Idaho Army National Guard Capt. Kiley Mullholland.
