GROTON, Conn. - Naval Submarine Base New London (SUBASE) got a theatrical taste of the mobster world when Moral Welfare and Recreation (MWR) hosted its first ever "Murder Mystery Café" at the SUBASE bowling alley, Jan. 28.

The audience joined the "Mobfellas" family for a night of chaotic power plays, wild banter, and Italian cuisine, as they were challenged to deduce the murderer’s identity and motive.

"You’ll need to keep your wits about you if you want to leave with your honor and your life intact," said mobster Harry Shill, played by Jonathan Krieger. "Figure out who whacked who and maybe you’ll have it ‘made.’"

The Mobfellas hilarious interaction with the audience created an exciting and fun atmosphere that was well received by the nearly 200 guests.

"My favorite mobster was Celeste Pelagatti," said audience member Vita Errichiello. "She interacted with us in an outrageous fashion. It was hilarious."

During the show, audience members were treated to a buffet dinner of stuffed shells, grilled Chicken, salad, vegetables, and rolls, as well as pastries, cannolis, and coffee for dessert.

Audience member Ann Ricca attended the Murder Mystery Café with her husband Bob Ricca, and both could not be more pleased.

"For just $15 each my husband and I got a real night out on the town," said Ann. "From the wonderful singing and entertainment to the delicious dinner and dessert, the whole night was wonderful."

"It goes to show that you really do not have to travel far to find a good and affordable time," said Bob Ricca. "MWR did a really great job in converting the bowling alley to a spacious dining hall and hosting this event. I’m really looking forward to the next one."

MWR also offers SUBASE patrons the ability to book the bowling alley for their own event.

"With appropriate planning we can transform the bowling alley lanes into a 4,800-square-foot catering venue, comfortably seating up to 225 people," said Bob Kydd, MWR Director. "Working with our Food and Beverage team is easy. Leave the planning, decorating, and entertainment to us. You just show up and have fun. We’ll work within your budget to deliver the best experience we can."

Kydd points out that the bowling center has already hosted five functions using its new expansion capability, and the MWR team has received "rave reviews."

Master Chief Ronald Clark, SUBASE Command Master Chief, views the bowling center’s expansion capability as an opportunity for increased safety and security.

"In today’s day and age, the military has been and can be a target," said Clark. "For years we’ve been trying to figure out different ways to hold command functions on base and under the blanket of safety and security the base provides. MWR’s new ability to set up the bowling center is ideal. Whether a holiday party, Hail and Farewell, Dinning In, or Dinning Out, the bowling center is now an adaptable and an affordable function space within our fence-line."

Clark highlights that using the facility more may lead to even greater opportunities and benefits.

"Whatever the celebration, Sailors should use MWR facilities and services to their fullest," said Clark. "This new capability at the bowling center is no different. The more we use it, the more we show a need, and the more need we have, the more MWR may be able to offer even better deals and opportunities."
