Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) welcomed enlisted U.S. Marines and Sailors, grades E-5 and below, to celebrate the grand opening of the Hangar E-Club at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, Jan. 26, 2018.
The Hangar E-Club is a joint project between the Defense Policy Review Initiative and MCCS intending to provide the enlisted grades E-5 and below a place of their own.
“Collaborating helps build a better relationship with our Japanese counterparts, and they’re happy to help us with establishing a friendship,” said Moses Daniel, manager of the Hangar E-Club. “This will help to bring morale up, and that’s a big thing to everyone. It is hard to be living in another country, and we all want to make it better for everyone.”
The two-story building’s features include a VIP lounge, poolroom and food court on the first floor and four bars and a dance floor, which can accommodate 250 people on the second.
Upon entering the VIP lounge, visitors will find a spacious seating area with leather couches and high-top tables. They will have access to high-speed internet, charging stations and dartboards.
The poolroom, located adjacent to the VIP lounge, offers four professional pool tables, dart boards, live music and will be the location of future pool and dart tournaments.
“This is a great place for us to go and relax,” said U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. William Clark, an aviation operations specialist with Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron (VMGR) 152. “We can be with friends and have fun.”
Patrons utilizing these rooms will have access to portable bars and will have the ability to place food orders from the Hangar E-Club Bar without having to venture upstairs.
A food court, including Taco Bell and Burger King, is scheduled to open spring 2018 and will be available during the club’s hours of operation.
For those wanting to skip the fast-food, the Hangar E-Club Bar on the second floor offers a more traditional bar food menu, which includes options like Irish nachos, chicken gizzards and pulled pork sandwiches.
Food and drinks can be ordered from any one of four full-service bars at the club, and seating is available next to the dance floor.
A combination of laser, strobe and black lights zoom around the room while attendees dance to live music performed by big named DJs from Okinawa, Tokyo and other places around Japan.
“I liked the club a lot, and I think it’s better than the old one,” said U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Megan Lahaye, a fixed-wing aircraft safety equipment mechanic with VMGR-152. “The music was nice, and the lounges were very comfortable.”
Restrooms on both floors will have lockers available for those who want to store their belongings while at the club.
The Hanger E-Club will be open Tuesday through Thursday from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m., and will be replacing the Landing Zone at Club Iwakuni.
“What we are trying to provide here at the Hangar E-Club, that we haven’t been able to provide at our other clubs, is an opportunity for service members to experience those same types of club atmospheres that they might in town,” said Daniel. “The Hangar E-Club strives to go above and beyond to give everyone a little taste of home with good customer service, a great atmosphere and something they’ll be able to enjoy responsibly. We have made this with them in mind.”
