Vice Chief of Naval Operations (VCNO) Adm. Bill Moran visited the Surface Warfare Officers School (SWOS) to get a firsthand look at surface warfare training Jan. 26.
Moran visited as part of his role as co-chair of the oversight board responsible for implementing recommendations from the Strategic Readiness Review and Comprehensive Review.
Moran discussed his focus of this particular trip with the school's staff.
"We need to build confidence back in the force," he said. "I think part of that includes giving commanding officers more time for training. But we also need to look at proficiency and how we define and measure it. We'll continue to look at these things and get after them."
SWOS staff showed Moran a snapshot of the surface warfare continuum of training from ensign through major command. The tour included trainers and simulators, such as the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Full Mission Bridge, where he watched the current LCS officer of the deck class practice driving their respective ship in and out of homeport. Moran also observed a re-creation of the USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) incident in the Conning Officer Virtual Environment trainer.
The final stop of Moran's visit to SWOS was an open discussion with the students of the Surface Commanders Course. This ten-week course prepares the surface warfare officers selected for the executive officer to commanding officer fleet-up program for service on their ships.
Moran plans to have additional trips that include getting feedback from operators in the fleet.
"We were really fortunate today to have Adm. Moran visit SWOS," said Capt. Scott Robertson, SWOS commanding officer. "SWOS is a center of excellence, and we strive daily to improve surface warfare and the naval profession through the training we provide."
SWOS readies sea-bound warriors to serve on surface combatants as officers, enlisted engineers and enlisted navigation professionals to fulfill the Navy's mission to maintain global maritime superiority.
