FALLS CHURCH, Va. (NNS) -- The U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) announced Navy Medicine's fiscal year 2017 Active Duty and Reserve Sailors of the Year (SOY) at Defense Health Headquarters, Jan. 26.

Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Jane Borja, from Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, was selected by BUMED's panel of senior enlisted leaders as Navy Medicine's 2017 SOY, and Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Jedediah Maldonado from Operational Health Support Unit (OHSU) San Diego, was selected as Navy Medicine’s 2017 Reserve SOY.

Rear Adm. Terry J. Moulton, deputy surgeon general of the Navy and deputy chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, kicked off the ceremony as the nominees anticipated director of the hospital corps, Force Master Chief Hosea Smith Jr.’s, announcement of this year's selectee.

“These Sailors represent us at Navy Medicine, and further more they represent the Navy,” Moulton said. “I’m proud to be a part of this ceremony, celebrating leaders, mentors and role models.”

The nominees were not able to physically accept their awards at Defense Health Headquarters, but were able to connect with leadership for this announcement via video teleconference (VTC).

Smith thanked the Sailors and all of the leaders across the Navy Medicine enterprise who helped make this ceremony happen.
"These seven phenomenal sailors are the future of Navy Medicine" said Smith. "Because of them I know that when it’s my time to retire that Navy Medicine is in good hands."

The remaining active duty nominees included Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Jon Solomon, assigned to U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Falls Church, Va., Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Alexandria Artis assigned to Naval Hospital Jacksonville and Hospital Corpsman 1st Patricia Lopez-Cruz, assigned to Navy Medicine Training and Support Command.

The remaining reserve nominees included Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Heather Blevins assigned to Expeditionary Medical Facility (EMF) Dallas One, and Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Pierre Seche assigned to OHSU Jacksonville Detachment G.

Each of the nominees will receive a Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal signed by Vice Adm. Forrest Faison, Navy surgeon general, for their participation.

Borja will now represent Navy Medicine in the Navy-wide 2017 Shore Sailor of the Year competition and Maldonado will represent Navy Medicine in the Commander, Navy Reserve Force Sailor of the Year competition later this year.

The Navy's Hospital Corps consists of more than 30,000 active duty and reserve Navy hospital corpsmen that deploy with Sailors and Marines worldwide, in both wartime and peacetime. The rating is the largest, most professionally diverse and highly decorated enlisted corps in the Navy.

Navy Medicine is a global health care network of 63,000 personnel that provide health care support to the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, their families and veterans, in high operational tempo environments, at expeditionary medical facilities, medical treatment facilities, hospitals, clinics, hospital ships and research units around the world.
