CHICAGO – Corpsmen from the Navy’s first graduating class under the new Hospital Corps “A” School curriculum completed a new Navy surgeon general initiative, the Hospital Corpsman (HM) clinical trauma experience proof-of-concept, Jan. 18.

This training began Oct. 16, 2017, allowing corpsmen to study and practice in-patient, out-patient clinic and trauma care.

The training represents a partnership between Navy Medicine, the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC), and John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County (Cook County), Illinois, a level one trauma center in Chicago.

“The concept of this trauma training for our corpsmen is to better prepare them for the next conflict,” said Force Master Chief Hosea Smith, Navy Medicine's force master chief and director of the Hospital Corps. “It was designed to increase their competency and confidence in treating traumatic injuries that they would encounter in combat environments.”

The program covered more than 400 hours of practical skills training, in-patient clinical rotations and level one trauma center rotations FHCC and the Cook County Trauma and Burn Unit.

“Our initial “A” school gave us the foundation and understanding we needed for this program,” said Hospitalman Apprentice Kemahni Sanders. “This training gave every one of us the confidence and knowledge that if someone’s life is on the line, we will be able to quickly react without hesitation or fear and use our knowledge to stabilize the patient.”

The training was one of several hospital corps training programs implemented in response to Chief of Naval Operations Admiral John Richardson’s competence and character priorities to achieve the best performance through learning.

“I was asked if I thought this course was successful,” said Smith. “After having the opportunity to talk to the 30 Sailors who completed it, I would say yes.”

In order to guarantee professional growth, students were paired with experienced nurses, senior independent duty corpsmen and officers that provided guidance and assurance. This effort was accomplished under a Training Affiliation Agreement with Cook County.

“It was an honor to spend time and help mold these corpsmen in this kind of program,” said Lt. Cmdr. Autumn Riddell, a Navy instructor. “By the end of the program the students were easily able to integrate with the staff, and in most situations would be the first responders to the trauma patients.”

Following the graduation ceremony Smith shared his final thoughts.

“I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to the James Lovell Federal Health Care Center and Navy Medicine Education Training Logistic Command and especially to John H. Stroger Jr. Cook County Hospital for their strong support,” said Smith. “I look forward to continuing this partnership in the future as we prepare our corpsmen to go down range.”

The Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center is the nation’s first fully integrated medical facility between the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense. It serves active duty military personnel, their families and Veterans. Lovell FHCC, which is located in North Chicago, operates four Great Lakes Naval Station clinics and three community based outpatient clinics in McHenry and Evanston, Ill. and Kenosha, Wis.

Navy Medicine is a global health care network of 63,000 personnel that provide health care support to the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, their families and veterans in high operational tempo environments, at expeditionary medical facilities, medical treatment facilities, hospitals, clinics, hospital ships and research units around the world.
