FORT GEORGE G. MEADE, Md. (NNS) – U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. 10th Fleet (FCC/C10F) announced the 2017 Sea and Shore Sailors of the Year for U.S. 10th Fleet, Jan. 19.
Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 1st Class Brandon Sneyd, assigned to Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) San Diego, was named the U.S. 10th Fleet Sea Sailor of the Year and Cryptologic Technician (Collection) 1st Class Jared Mollette, assigned to Cryptologic Warfare Group Six, was named U.S. 10th Fleet Shore Sailor of the Year.
The announcement was made at an award ceremony held in the Fleet Operations Center at the FCC/C10F headquarters at Fort George G. Meade, Md.
Commands across the domain nominated Sailors of the Year in 2017. Ten of the finalists then traveled to Fleet Cyber Command where they spent the week visiting cultural and historic sites in the Baltimore-Washington area before being interviewed by the final selection board on Wednesday, Jan 17.
Sneyd will travel to Suffolk, Va., to compete for the Naval Information Forces Sailor of the Year He attributes his success to the second chance he was given by his first command master chief, Command Master Chief Brian Porter, and mentorship from other chiefs along the way.
“I was in complete shock and incredibly humbled, I held my peers in such high esteem that I was convinced any of us could have won,” said Sneyd, a Farimington, Ill. native. “I believe that confidence is key, but I also overcame some bumps in my career and showed the perseverance to make up for it.”
“Selecting winners from this group of Sailors was really difficult. We had to choose from the cream of the crop,” said Command Master Chief James Ritch, Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station San Diego command master chief and Sailor of the Year board member. “What set these two petty officers apart was their confidence and ability to articulate their leadership vision and how they are able to make such significant impact at their command.”
Mollette, a native of Newburgh, Ind., will now have to compete in Washington to be named the Vice Chief of Naval Operations Sailor of the Year. He views his selection as a way to set an example for others and to represent his command.
“The feeling of being selected for this amazing opportunity is hard to describe, hearing my name called amongst those other extraordinary Sailors was both very humbling and emotional and just adds to my duty of representing all of 10th fleet to the best of my ability,” said Mollette. “It is above all, an extreme privilege.”
"Meeting these Sailors and reading about their accomplishment has given me renewed confidence in the future of the Navy and the Information Warfare Community," said Command Master Chief Dee Allen, FCC/C10F command master chief. "Although we were only able to choose two winners, all of the finalists, their commands and their shipmates should be extremely proud of their achievements. I know that each one of these leaders will continue to lift others up as they advance in their careers."
U.S. Fleet Cyber Command serves as the Navy component command to U.S. Strategic Command and U.S. Cyber Command, and the Navy’s Service Cryptologic Component commander under the National Security Agency/Central Security Service. Fleet Cyber Command also reports directly to the Chief of Naval Operations as an Echelon II command.
U.S. 10th Fleet is the operational arm of Fleet Cyber Command and executes its mission through a task force structure similar to other warfare commanders. In this role, C10F provides operational direction through its Maritime Operations Center located at Fort George Meade Md., executing command and control over assigned forces in support of Navy or joint missions in cyber/networks, cryptologic/signals intelligence and space.
