The “Frozen Rumble” challenge was issued to Maj. Gen. Andrew Poppas, 101st Abn. Div. commander, by Jim Durrett, Montgomery County mayor, Dec. 12, 2017.
“I have a great appreciation for [the military] and [supporting them] is what we’re supposed to do,” Durrett said. “It’s not rocket science to know that we should support the people who defend our freedom. I’m going to be behind them each and every day, every step of the way.”
Answering the call, Poppas organized a team of commanders, senior enlisted leaders and division staff to face off against Durrett’s team of county officials, coaches and staff from Austin Peay State University and Nashville Predators players and staff for an evening of friendly competition designed to further connect Ft. Campbell with its neighbors.
“What a great place to live, this is why we love this community,” Poppas said. “Everybody fights to get back here and it’s known in the Army as the best place to live. It’s a community that absolutely envelopes you with grace and passion.”
The broomball game consisted of three-eight minute periods with players scooting across the ice on normal shoes, not skates, and using plastic paddles with the intent of putting a ball, not a puck, into the goal.
The Screaming Eagles took the lead in the second period with a single goal, but Durrett’s team answered quickly with a goal of their own.
The final period ended in a tie and rolled into sudden death, a four-minute period to determine the winner. After a few near-misses by Durrett’s team, the 101st slid in a goal to seal the game and take home the win.
“24 minutes, and plus four more, with everyone committed to the end,” Poppas said. “That was a warriors’ and champions’ game!”
After a round of handshakes and high fives, Durrett presented a trophy – a hockey stick, signed by Nashville Predators’ P.K. Subban – to Poppas, who accepted it on behalf of the 101st Abn. Div.
“Congratulations to the 101st!” Durrett said. “They have a motto ‘when there’s a job to be done, ask the 101’, so guys great job. Thanks everyone for coming out, and really, thanks for coming out and supporting our military. I think this is what it’s really all about.”
Joe Padula, former “Strike” Soldier with 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Abn. Div. and host of the Joe Padula Show mornings on Rewind 94.3, provided commentary on the game with his cohost, Star. Also in attendance was the Nashville Predators Energy Team and team mascot, Gnash.
