Getting to know the Wilford Hall Department of Dermatology

    SAN ANTONIO, TX, UNITED STATES

    01.19.2018

Story by Senior Airman Stefan Alvarez

    59th Medical Wing

The 59th Medical Wing’s Department of Dermatology, located in the Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center, is the second largest dermatology clinic in the country.

The Joint service dermatology department is comprised of 23 service members from the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force that routinely score in the greater 95th percentile amongst their military and civilian peers on the nationwide board training exams.

These dermatologists spend countless hours, reporting on their work to stay up-to-date with the latest discoveries and breakthroughs in the dermatology field and conduct cutting-edge research. They are also involved in collaborations with renowned organizations such as the Shriners’ Burn Hospital for Children – Boston and the Wellman Center for Photo-medicine at the Harvard Medical School.

“In my time with the dermatology department, our greatest success has come from our continued investment in the Dermatology Resident Physicians, led by their program director, Lt. Col. Wendi Wohltmann” said Maj. Nathaniel Miletta, a U.S. Army dermatology resident at the 59th MDW. “Individual achievements are the result of their outstanding training and motivation, and represents a force-multiplier for military dermatology; allowing us to provide outstanding clinical care, to conduct innovative research, and to serve in local and national leadership positions that positively represent the military and dermatology.”

Housed within the dermatology department, the laser surgery and scar center has one of the most extensive collections of laser equipment and procedural capability in the country, offering unsurpassed education for the resident physicians. With this resource at their disposal, they are able to perform a multitude of different operations. The dermatology department also include the three fellowship-trained Mohs surgeons who are skin cancer specialists. Due to their advanced training, they are able to review pathology in real-time in order to achieve maximum skin cancer clearance while minimizing the amount of tissue removed. The Mohs surgeons receive special training in reconstructive surgery to optimize your aesthetic outcome when treating various forms of skin cancer.

The 59th MDW dermatology department isn’t limited to cases in the United States. Using state of the art teledermatology software, the dermatologists are able to receive consults from all of the world and give recommendations to the physicians on the front line. Annually, the teledermatology clinic receives roughly 2000 consults.
