    21st Theater Sustainment Command

KAISERSLAUTERN, GERMANY – The 39th Transportation Battalion Property Book Office was presented the Department of the Army-level, Chief of Staff Supply Excellence Award in a ceremony held at Vogelweh Housing Complex, Jan. 10.

Maj. Gen. Steven A. Shapiro, commanding general, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, presented the winning unit -- 39th Transportation Battalion with the HQDA-level award -- and the runners up, 5th Quartermaster Theater Aerial Delivery Company and Wiesbaden Supply Support Activity with their respective United States Army Europe-level awards.

“I appreciate the awardees and the hard work that went into this,” Shapiro said. “I further appreciate the continued level of excellence on all of these types of functions.”

The Chief of Staff, Army, Supply Excellence Award Program was created during the Total Army Worldwide Supply Conference, held November 1984. The objectives were to enhance logistical readiness, enforce the Command Supply Discipline Program and to encourage the use of available resources to increase unit readiness.

Each year, units compete in this competition and the primary criteria for evaluation includes demonstrating success in supervisory and managerial responsibilities, compliance with the Army standard supply policy and procedures, the Command Supply Discipline Program, and the Army management philosophy.

“We went through multiple inspections, long nights where we burned the midnight oil,” said Warrant Officer Craig Sears, 39th Transportation Battalion property book officer. “I’m extremely happy for myself, my team and everyone who supported us throughout this process because we couldn’t have made it this far without our subordinate units doing their jobs.”

5th Quartermaster has made extraordinary improvements to achieve and maintain high standards and excellence in supply in becoming the semifinalist at the DA level. The unit’s accomplishments include a commendable rating “100 percent score” during the most recent battalion Command Supply Discipline Program.

“Getting a 2-star and 3-star recognition for a company of our size, is amazing,” said Capt. Phillip M. Messina, 5th Quartermaster TADC commander. “The dedication, hard work and attention to detail of our NCOs in our supply and arms room section have improved mission accuracy and capabilities.”

The Wiesbaden SSA has distinguished itself as being one of the best organizations in USAREUR by providing excellent customer support to military and civilian customers. The SSA is made up of civilians to provide logistical support that contributes to improving logistics readiness and to the overall supply success of more than 200 customers.

“This is an award I’ve always wanted,” said Sgt. 1st Class Carol Newland, 5th Quartermaster, senior supply sergeant. “It took a lot of hard work and sacrifice to make it to this level so I put my heart and soul into it to win this award.”

A representative from USAREUR G-4 was on hand to provide congratulations and a message from his command.

“On behalf of the commanding general of USAREUR, and the Army Chief of Staff, we are honored to have the units here this morning to present them with their awards,” said John Acebo, USAREUR logistic management specialist. “We want to thank the units for their efforts in supply excellence.”
