Superheroes, princesses, Minions and other costumed trick-or-treaters lined up to collect candy when the 704th Military Intelligence Brigade and Fort Meade co-hosted “Trunk or Treat” on Oct. 25 in the Smallwood Hall parking lot.
The two-hour event was held to bring the community closer together.
Trunk-or-treating is a safe alternative for families who want to participate in Halloween festivities in a secure and fun environment without the worries of going door to door with traditional trick-or-treating.
What started just a few years ago as an organizational event, put on by the 741st MI Battalion with just a dozen or so decorated cars, has since featured more than 80 decorated cars filled with candy. Over 1,100 service members, families and civilians came out to support the event this year.
“We anticipate it getting bigger every year and we anticipate continuing this event because it is a great event that families and the community like to get involved with,” said Sgt. Steven Bryant, assigned to Company C, 741st MI.
The 741st MI was recognized last year as Fort Meade’s Volunteer Unit of the Year. Trunk or Treat was just part of its desire to give back to the community.
“Fort Meade is home to us, and [the] garrison has done so many things to support our families and our Soldiers,” said Lt. Col. Eric S. Fowler, commander of the 741st MI. “This is just an opportunity for us to give back,”
This year, the Directorate of Emergency Services rolled out with its fire and police vehicles and to pass out candy to the children. There were also games, face painting, food and a haunted house.
Several trunks featured ghoulish music, webs and remote-controlled spiders, while others had carnival games, “underwater” shark tanks, and tricks instead of treats
At the end of the Trunk or Treat, winners were chosen for best trunk display and best costume. Winners were judged on creativity and originality, and given cool gifts by the commander of the 741st MI.
“We’re just out here to show that we are a family organization and that we really care about the community,” Bryant said.
