Camp Shelby to Host Centennial Salute and Open House

CAMP SHELBY, Miss. – The Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center will host a black-tie gala July 13, 2017, and an open house July 15, 2017, in celebration of the base’s 100th anniversary.
The Centennial Salute black-tie gala will begin at 6 p.m. at the Hattiesburg Lake Terrace Convention Center and will provide our community members the opportunity to socialize with Mississippi National Guard members.
The formal event will feature a multiple-course dinner, and entertainment by the 41st Army Band and The Victory Belles from the World War II Museum in New Orleans.
Renowned veteran war correspondent and highly acclaimed co-author of We Were Soldiers Once…And Young, Joe Galloway, will deliver the keynote address during the black-tie gala.
“We are honored for an individual, who is held in such high regard globally, to be joining us for a special night of celebration and recognition. Camp Shelby’s centennial marks a milestone in our history, and the American Solider has always been at the forefront of our operations.
Through his writing and reporting, Mr. Galloway’s life work has given a remarkable amount of exposure to the valor and sacrifice of American Soldiers. To share this evening with him, along with distinguished veterans and our many comrades and sponsors, is a truly extraordinary opportunity,” said Col. Greg Michel, Camp Shelby commander.
In addition, Camp Shelby will also host a Centennial Celebration at the base’s Mississippi Armed Forces Museum Saturday, July 15, 2017, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will be free and open to the public.
The event will feature entertainment by the patriotic melody trio The Victory Belles, country music artist Travis Clark, historic military equipment, WWII period re-enactors, performances by the 41st Army Band, aerial flyovers, Special Forces demonstrations, various food vendors, and kid-friendly activities.
A change of command ceremony will also take place at the museum prior to the event’s kick off at 9 a.m., where Michel will relinquish command to Col. Bobby Ginn, incoming Camp Shelby commander.
