2017 Peruvian DESI Deployment Wraps Up in San Diego

During Pisagua's deployment to San Diego, it participated in various training and certification evolutions.

"Pisagua participated in a range of challenging operations while deployed here in southern California, including the support of our naval air forces, our surface forces and our submarines," said Capt. Chris Cavanaugh, commander, Submarine Squadron 11. "These exercises provided significant opportunities for U.S. and Peruvian forces to learn from one another and to enhance our collective capabilities."

Pisagua helped certify the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group during their Composite Unit Training Exercise (COMPUTEX) and Joint Task Force Exercise (JTFEX) by acting as an undersea adversary. It also participated in an anti-submarine warfare exercise with the Helicopter Maritime Strike Weapons School Pacific.

"DESI serves as a pillar of strength and mutual growth," said Rear Adm. Russell Allen, deputy commander of U.S. 3rd Fleet. "Over the past 15 years and through over 1,700 deployed days, Peruvian submariners have trained side-by-side with U.S. Navy Sailors to develop the cooperative relationships necessary to advance both countries' interests."

DESI allows partner navies to work together to train and test undersea warfare capabilities through engagement tactics, weapon system tests and close encounter operations. These training evolutions foster international cooperation and partnership by enhancing interoperability of assets between the U.S. and Peruvian navies.
