SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Nov. 8, 2017) – Two Sailors assigned to Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command (NCDOC) used their expertise to provide training to attendees of Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet’s (COMNAVSURFPAC) Cyber Hackathon.
Information Systems Technician 1st Class Christopher Haller and Cryptologic Technician (Networks) 1st Class Nathan Davis, both members of NCDOC’s Incident Handling and Malware Analysis teams, gave training on the first day of the event, covering the topic of log analysis.
“I gave training on what NCDOC does for the Fleet, why computer incidents are a concern, and how the computer network incident life cycle is used in an incident response,” said Haller. “Davis gave training that focused on how to analyze Windows event logs for malicious activity as well as other important events across other types of computer logs.”
Personnel from across the Fleet took part in the event and helped contribute to its success. Participants included Sailors and civilians from nine different Surface Ships; U.S. 3rd Fleet, Naval Air Forces; U.S. Pacific Fleet; the U.S. Naval Academy; Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station San Diego; NCDOC and Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division.
“IT1 Haller and CTN1 Davis were critical in providing the training to enable the participants to have the greatest success possible. The time that they put into training and mentoring throughout the event was consistently noted as an asset to the event’s success,” said Lt. Peyton Price, COMNAVSURFPAC Force Cyber Operations Officer and event host/coordinator.
“I believe in NCDOC's capabilities to reach the Fleet and galvanize the Navy's defensive cyberspace operations,” Haller said. “At the hackathon, I was given plenty of fantastic feedback that we continue to work on in order to improve what NCDOC can do for the Fleet.”
NCDOC takes advantage of cyber hackathon opportunities like this one, hosted by COMNAVSURFPAC, to provide valuable cybersecurity training that strengthens bonds across the Information Warfare Community and increases fleet collaboration in defensive cyberspace operations.
NCDOC’s mission is to execute defensive cyberspace operations and enable global power projection through proactive network defense and reports operationally to U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. 10th Fleet.
U.S. Fleet Cyber Command serves as the Navy component command to U.S. Strategic Command and U.S. Cyber Command, and the Navy’s Service Cryptologic Component commander under the National Security Agency/Central Security Service. Fleet Cyber Command also reports directly to the Chief of Naval Operations as an Echelon II command.
U.S. 10th Fleet is the operational arm of Fleet Cyber Command and executes its mission through a task force structure similar to other warfare commanders. In this role, C10F provides operational direction through its Maritime Operations Center located at Fort George Meade Md., executing command and control over assigned forces in support of Navy or joint missions in cyber/networks, electronic warfare, cryptologic/signals intelligence and space.
