The story begins with a Facebook post.
Chief Hospital Corpsman Mike Stewart, a Submarine Independent Duty Corpsman stationed at Navy Undersea Medical Institute (NUMI) in Groton, Conn., stumbled across it while scanning the social media site. In the post, a member of a local food pantry was looking for a place for Brad Kelsey to park his car.
Kelsey, it seemed, had recently been forced out of his living situation and with the brutal northeastern winter beginning to bear down, he was living out of his car.
That’s when Stewart had an idea.
“I saw the post and started to brainstorm when I realized my camper was vacant,” Stewart said. “I winterized it earlier that day, and it was fresh in my mind.”
Stewart contacted Miki Leighton, the supervisor at the food pantry, and offered up the camper for the winter. And Rich Hines, another member of the Groton community who saw the post, provided a generator to make sure the camper is powered through the cold season.
The story doesn’t end there, though. This situation has become the beginning of a friendship.
“Brad and I never met before this all happened,” Stewart said, “but we have become very close.”
They’ve become so close, in fact, that Stewart invited him over for dinner with his family. And Stewart and Hines speak daily to ensure Kelsey has everything he needs.
“When I didn’t get help from where I figured I would get help,” Kelsey said, “they were standing up and giving me help.”
This story, as of now, doesn’t have an ending.
NUMI is a detachment of Navy Medicine Operational Training Center, a global health care network of Navy medical professionals around the world who provide high-quality health care to more than one million eligible beneficiaries. Navy Medicine personnel deploy with Sailors and Marines worldwide, providing critical mission support aboard ships, in the air, under the sea, and on the battlefield.
