Recognition, especially when it reflects a positive outcome, is always welcome for individuals, organizations, and even medical centers.

The William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia, S.C., falls into the latter category this year with recognition as being one of 40 South Carolina hospitals getting a Certified Zero Harm Award.

Lucy Austin, Infection Control Nurse Manager and Billie Thompson, Patient Safety Manager at Dorn VA Medical Center, were both instrumental in making sure the medical center was submitted for recognition.

The award means that there were zero surgical site infections for total hip and knee replacements. To earn the award, hospitals must experience no hospital-acquired infections over a period of time.

This is the first time Dorn VA Medical Center has received the award in the active years of the Zero Harm Awards program.

The South Carolina Hospital Association (SCHA) has given out the Zero Harm Awards since 2014 to acknowledge hospitals on the forefront of preventing medical errors, which is estimated to be the third leading cause of death in the United States.

“There are so many persons who have made this acknowledgement possible,” Austin and Thompson both noted. “We have a number of persons involved in teams who contributed to the zero infection. They include surgery teams, and other multidisciplinary teams such as those who work on the Environmental Management Service, the Sterile Process Service, engineers, nurses, physicians and not to forget the pre-op preparations to after-care staff on the floor once procedures are complete.”

Hip and knee replacements are becoming part of the more frequently occurring surgeries in the medical center, thanks to the wonderful team effort.

Vice president for Quality and Safety at SCHA, Lori Gibbons, stated, “Awards are all part of the Association’s efforts to guide and support the state’s hospitals in creating and sustaining highly reliable healthcare.”

With acknowledgement of the Zero Harm Award, Veterans can now decide to include Dorn VA Medical Center as one of their first choices for hip and knee replacement surgeries.
