No power or running water can lead to frustrating circumstances, even in with the most mundane daily tasks. Even more so for those in the health care field, needing to take care of those with health issues.

Recently, Airmen from the 156th Airlift Wing from Muniz Air National Guard Base in Carolina, Puerto Rico recently visited Hospital del Nino in the Bayamon area. They brought needed supplies to try and lend a helping hand and spread some holiday cheer for the little patients.

“We brought four pallets filled with donated supplies essential for an organization like this,” said 2nd Lt. Jeffrey Ramos, health services administrator, “There were things like diapers for a variety of ages, baby wipes, disinfectant wipes and a number of other things that will hopefully help out this location.”

Donations was not the only thing the group of airmen from the 156th AW had in mind for this supply distribution mission. With some last minute initiative thinking, the group came up with a plan to bring momentary smiles to any children they would encounter. They collected treats, snacks, coloring books, and a costume of ‘Sparky the Firedog,’ a fire preventative mascot.

Airman 1st Class Alex Figueroa, an airman on State Active Duty since the hurricanes, was quick to volunteer to dress up, despite the 90 degree weather and heavy humidity that was included in the day’s trip. The black and white spotted floppy eared dog suit included a mascot’s head, a fireman’s suit, and heavy galoshes – the getup was cute, but was a barely breathable uniform in such heavy humidity.

Motivated by the smiles and laughs of little children, lots of water, a helping hand and under the careful eye of his wingman – the visit was a success.

“I know what it was like to be on the other side of something like this,” said Figueroa after the visit was complete, “I always loved it when people would come visit dressed like Spiderman or other superheroes … it feels amazing I could do this today.”
