Story by Staff Sgt. Heather Heiney

    403rd Wing

When there was a glitch in the Unit Training Assembly Processing System that prevented the pay for Security Forces members to be processed, Sherita Johnson, 403rd Wing Financial Management budget analyst, did not stop until the problem was fixed.

Whenever anyone tried to export the pay data in UTAPS, the process wheel would just continue to spin until it timed out and displayed an error message. Several people tried with no success and sent tickets to the UTAPS help desk, which didn’t have an immediate solution either and said the team would have to wait until a resolution was found.

“That really bothered me,” Johnson said. “I thought – there has to be something we can do to get these people paid.”

She worked with the 403rd Wing commander to find a point of contact at Air Force Reserve Command who could help. Once Johnson had a point of contact at AFRC, she and that person worked with the UTAPS Program Manager until the problem was finally fixed and the pay data exported. Altogether, it took three weeks from when the unit training assembly ended before the pay was finally exported.

Chief Master Sgt. Christopher Barnby, 403rd Wing command chief, said that he and the commander wanted to recognize Johnson because when no one could find a way to get the Security Forces members paid, she kept working until they did.

“I’m all about taking care of the people,” Johnson said. “You don’t mess with anyone’s pay, you pay folks for the work they do.”

In addition to her role in the finance office, Johnson puts on the Air Force uniform every UTA and is a senior master sergeant with the 41st Aerial Port Squadron as their transportation superintendent. She’s been with the wing for more than 28 years and spent the majority of that time as an Air Reserve Technician with the 41st APS. She transitioned into her civilian slot in finance April 2012 and has been balancing both roles since.

She said that what she enjoys most about the 403rd Wing is the family atmosphere and how everyone helps each other.

“It’s all about getting the mission done,” she said. “If we take care of the people, the people will take care of the mission.”

She also said that her main objective is to make a difference with the young Airmen by leading by example and helping them to reach their highest potential.

“Do what you can to help someone else,” she said. “And get out of the ‘that’s not my job’ mentality.”

If members could serve more than 33 years, Johnson said she would stay as long as she could.

“I love what I do,” she said.
