Fort Stewart, Ga. - Spartans from 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, conducted unstabilized gunnery tables three through six, Nov. 30 - Dec. 09,  2017 at  multi-purpose range complex on Fort Stewart, Ga.

Unstabilized gunnery is shot from vehicles that have mounted crew-served weapons without an integrated fire control system. A fire control system built into a combat vehicle provides a level of stabilization that facilitates an accurate shoot-on-the-move capability. Unstabilized gunnery is usually shot from smaller wheeled vehicles such as the HMMWV whereas stabilized gunnery refers to tracked vehicles such as Tanks and Bradley fighting vehicles.

The highly structured progression of training begins with the assessment of basic individual skills and culminates with collective platoon training, allowing leaders the ability to certify vehicle crews before collective maneuver tables.

The crews are scored on their ability to effectively identify and eliminate threats promptly while using proper firing commands and reporting procedures through multiple scenarios, including a scenario simulating a Nuclear, Biological, Chemical attack and a night engagement.

With the brigade’s recent conversion to the U.S. Army’s 15th ABCT, gunnery assists leaders in the development of standard operating procedures to use during stabilized gunnery and future collective training exercised.

“Training lethal, wheeled vehicle crews to support future collective training events in 2018 is key,” said Lt. Col. Justin D. Harper, commander of 3rd Combined Arms Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 2nd ABCT, 3rd ID, “This is also an opportunity for us to build battalion level proficiency in resourcing gunnery training for the future.”
